White blood cells are the immune system’s soldiers. There are several types (neutrophils, lymphocytes and others), and each has its own job. The total white cell count shows how hard your immune system is working right now.
That is why the white cell count is used first and foremost to look for inflammation and infection — and the differential can suggest what kind of problem it is.
A high count (leukocytosis) usually means the body is fighting something off.
A low count (leukopenia) means there are fewer defending cells than usual. Causes include certain viral infections, some medications, nutritional deficiencies and bone marrow disorders.

The total white cell count is always read together with the differential (which cell types exactly are up or down) and the rest of the blood work. It is often the differential that hints at whether it is a virus or a bacterium.
